“So, if I were to have a total fixer-upper motorcycle, would you happen to know anyone who would want to help me fix it up?” I bit the corner of my lip and lifted my brow.
Xan stopped chewing and eyed me over his tenderloin sandwich for a moment before his face broke into a huge smile. “No shit? You got a bike?”
I held up a hand. “Okay, before you get too excited, I think it’s fixable. However, it’s very much in need of fixing. The guy said the engine just needs a good servicing, so that sounded somewhat promising. I know it needs a lot of repair and replacing along with body work.” I winced. “But, in my defense, the guy just gave it to me as long as I’d pick it up and get it off his property. I guess it might be too far gone, but I’d love to have you check it out. If you think it’s doable, maybe you could help me?”
Xan put his food down and leaned back in his chair. With one hand crossed over his midsection and a hand on his chin, he cocked his head and appeared to be thinking hard. “Spend time with a friend doing something I adore even more than fry sauce?”
I chuckled. “Maybe decide after you see the bike.”
“I’ll take a look at it, but I have to warn you that I’m pretty determined once I set my mind to something. If your girl gives me even the slightest indication of being repairable, I’m going to be totally on board.” He rubbed his hands together. “Have you seen her? Ohhhh, please tell me she’s a complete diamond in the rough that just needs polishing.”
“I saw a picture. It was recognizable as a motorcycle. Looked like she’d been through hell and back. But the guy said he wanted to give it away to someone willing to fix her up rather than just selling her for parts.” I held up a finger in warning. “But remember, I have next to zero experience with motorcycles aside from riding them a few times. I figure if it was free, and I’d only be out the money for parts and such, maybe it was a worthwhile project to take on.”
“I love it. I’m definitely in. When can you bring it to the shop?” Xan’s eyes sparkled like brown gemstones reflecting the sun.
“Couple of questions first.” I popped a few fries in my mouth.
Xan took another bite of tenderloin and waited.
“How much will parts cost?”
Xan wrinkled his nose. “Hard to say. I can get them pretty cheap, but it’s going to depend on what she needs. A lot of bike enthusiasts buy what they can when they can and fix things slowly as able.”
I nodded. “I can do that. Save money for the more expensive parts as time goes along.” I took a drink. “Will Bay be okay with you working on my bike at the shop? Do you think he’ll charge?”
Xan shook his head.
